Longtime United Press International photographer William Carey Womack of Shelby, Ala., who was known by his friends as "Cosmo," died on Feb. 27, 2003. He was 65.
Womack worked as a photographer for the now-defunct Nashville Banner for 15 years before joining UPI for a 25-year career. He worked at the wire service bureaus in Alabama, Mississippi and South Carolina.
His last UPI station before retirement was in Jackson, Miss., where he covered assignments in Alabama and Mississippi, and often in other areas of the South.
After his retired, Womack and his wife, Martha, opened and operated for 13 years the Waxachatchee Restaurant and Marina near Birmingham. They also traveled frequently.
Womack was the son of the late Dr. Ray Womack and Mrs. Billye Page Womack.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children children -- Sean (Sara) Womack, Robin W. Sutherland, Denise W. (Richard) McCord, William Carey (Laura) Womack Jr., and Caren W. Zysk; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
