Here's an Aug. 22, 1994, announcement by UPI that Faxcast Broadcast Corp., would carry its service:
NEW YORK, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Faxcast Broadcast Corp. announced an agreement Monday with United Press International to carry UPI's real- time news services throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Southeast Asia.
Faxcast broadcasts facsimiles on the vertical blanking interval of both television and satellite broadcast channels.
"Subscribers now have a choice of receiving broadcast fax, broadcast software, broadcast data and the broadcast UPI news service, in addition to traditional wire service features," said Vince Waterson, business development director for Faxcast.
Under the agreement, Faxcast will market UPI's news report to its clients.
Faxcast uses an unused portion of the television signal, known as the vertical blanking interval, to broadcast faxes or data directly to fax machines, printers or personal computers through a television antenna or satellite receiver. The signals are scrambled to prevent unauthorized reception.
Faxcast is based in London. Its major shareholders and partners include Australia's The Seven Network, NBC, TVNZ of New Zealand and Star TV of Hong Kong.
