Here's the "Followup" section of David Moffit's 1979 guide on how to cover football for UPI:
Many newspapers, especially those which do not have Sunday editions, want a Monday followup story on that Saturday game you covered. These usually are written Sunday, back at the bureau, after you have had time to reflect on the game. Such post-game stories are better received if they are featurized. The main emphasis should be on why the game turned out as it did and can best be told through the eyes of the coaches and players.
If the game involved a team which is in one of the college conferences, you should provide some followup material, quotes especially, to aid the staffer writing the Monday conference roundups.
File your notes away for future reference. You never know when you may need them to help write a later story.
